Notapub vs Timeleft

Timeleft sits six strangers down to dinner. You answer a personality quiz, pick a city and a language, buy a seat, and on the night you get a restaurant and five people you have never met. You learn a little about the group the evening before and the venue on the morning. There is usually somewhere to go afterwards if the table wants to keep going. It runs in more than 200 cities across 52 countries and the site claims over three million members, under the line "No bios. No swiping. No planning."

Notapub agrees with that line and takes the ticket out of it. No bio, nothing to swipe, nothing to plan, and no seat to buy. You say what you want, and the people it fits reach you.

A good table is a general answer

Six strangers over dinner is a strong product for a common problem. You are new in a city, or your friends have all had children, and you want to be in a room with people. Timeleft solves the hard parts: who, where, when, and the awkwardness of having decided any of it yourself.

It gives you six people chosen for how the evening will go. The odds that one of them is a person you specifically needed are whatever chance allows, because the table was never asked to contain them. Notapub asks. You write the thing, and what comes back is people connected to that thing rather than to a seating plan.

The quiz cannot carry your actual life

The intake covers age, temperament, what you do, how you argue, so a table balances. That is the right input for a dinner.

It is the wrong input for everything you would tell an old friend. You are trying to leave your industry. You have a spare room from August. You need someone who has raised money in Europe. None of that is a quiz answer, and all of it is a plain sentence, which is the only thing Notapub asks for.

Two per month, and the bill

A Timeleft seat is a booking fee, and dinner on top is usually several times the ticket. Twice a month for a year is a serious number. There is a subscription if you go often enough for it to pay.

Notapub is free. That difference matters most for the low-stakes asks, the ones that are worth doing but not worth an evening and a restaurant bill: who has a ladder, who has done this visa, who wants a bike. Timeleft's model cannot price those. A free one does not have to.

Where it works, and when

Timeleft is enormous by the standards of an events company and still bounded by where there is a table and a night you can attend. Notapub has no venue and no calendar. It works from your phone in a small town, at two in the morning, for a person who lives four time zones away and is the only one who has what you need.

When a group is genuinely the right answer, Notapub forms one, and forms it around a reason. It puts people together when one of them wants what another one has, so the group has something to do rather than a table to sit at.

Common questions

Is Notapub a free alternative to Timeleft?

It is free, and it covers the same want, which is meeting people you would not otherwise meet. It does not book restaurants and it does not run dinners.

Do I have to show up somewhere on a set night?

No. Nothing is scheduled. What you wrote keeps working and people reach you when it fits them.

Does Notapub put me in groups?

Sometimes, when a group makes sense: it pairs people whose wants and haves line up, so there is a reason for the group to exist.
