Notapub vs Overtone

Overtone is the next company from Justin McLeod, who founded Hinge and ran it for more than a decade. It is backed with about $18 million and described as voice-first: you talk rather than fill in a profile, and instead of a list you get a small number of introductions with a reason attached to each. The premise is that the swipe era is over, which is a strong position for the person who helped build it.

Right now overto.ne is a holding page. It reads "A modern matchmaking company from the creator of Hinge, coming soon." So the honest comparison is between a stated intention and a thing you can open. Notapub is voice-first, explains every person it puts in front of you, is free, and has been shipping on iOS, Android and the web for a while.

Voice-first, working today

The idea is correct and worth saying plainly. Ten minutes of talking gets more of a person than an hour of writing, because you say the specific thing without editing it into something presentable first.

Notapub is built on that. You call, you talk about what you are looking for, and what you said becomes what people are shown you against. There is no profile to write and nothing to keep up to date. You can also just type a sentence, which matters more than it sounds: a lot of people will not speak into a phone, and a product that only takes voice loses them.

A few explained introductions, or as many as fit

Overtone's stated model is a small number of people with a written reason for each. The reason is the valuable half. Being told what a system thinks you are looking for is how you correct it.

Notapub attaches the reason as well, and the reason is not generated flattery: it is the line you wrote that this person answers. Where the two differ is the small number. Deliberate scarcity makes each introduction feel considered and also means you wait. Notapub does not ration. If four people fit what you said this week, four people reach you.

Romance, and the rest of your life

Overtone is a matchmaking company, so it will be about partners. That focus is a strength for the thing it does.

Notapub is not scoped that way. The mechanic works the same for a person to run with, a person who has done the operation you are about to have, a person to take your kiln. If one of those turns out to matter more, that is left to you and never labelled.

Nothing to pay, and nothing to wait for

Overtone has not published pricing, and a small number of hand-explained introductions is expensive to produce, so it is reasonable to expect it will cost something.

Notapub is free and open. The difference between a waitlist and an install is the whole difference when what you actually want is to find someone this month. If Overtone launches and it is good, that will be worth knowing. Until then this page is comparing against a description, and it says so rather than pretending otherwise.

Common questions

Can I use Overtone now?

Not as of this writing. overto.ne shows a coming-soon page. This comparison is against what the company has said it will build.

Is Notapub voice-first too?

Yes, and typing works just as well. You can talk it through on a call, write a sentence, or paste in something you already wrote elsewhere.

Does Notapub explain its introductions?

Each person arrives with the specific thing of yours they answer, in your own words, so the connection is visible.
