Notapub vs Hinge

Hinge is the considered one. You build a profile out of six photos and three prompt answers, and people respond to a specific part of it rather than to the whole card, which is a genuine improvement on a swipe. It sells itself as the app designed to be deleted. It is also the fastest-growing product in its category: revenue of $689 million in 2025, up a quarter on the year, with paid tiers running from around a hundred dollars a year to several hundred.

Notapub keeps the part that works, which is responding to something specific a person actually said, and removes the profile and the price. You write a sentence about what you want. People who fit it reach you, answering that line.

This is not a pub. Ages 13+.

The prompt is right and the profile around it is the tax

Hinge's insight holds up. "I'll fall for you if" gets a better opening message than a face does, because it gives the other person something to answer.

The rest of the profile is homework. Six photos in the right order, three prompts that are funny without trying, a set of fields you are meant to keep current. Most people write it once and it decays. Notapub is only the prompt part. One line, in your words, no photos to arrange and no fields to maintain, and the line is a real thing you want rather than a conversation starter written to be charming.

Designed to be deleted, priced to be kept

The slogan and the business are pulling in opposite directions, and that tension is visible in the pricing. Hinge+ and HingeX exist because subscription revenue is what a quarter of annual growth is made of, and both sell you more of the same thing: more people, better placement, more of the queue.

Notapub is free, so it has no reason to hold anything back and nothing to upsell you when you run out. There is also nothing to delete, because there is no profile. What you said stops working when you take it down.

Standouts and Roses are rationing

Hinge's paid mechanics are all forms of scarcity: a limited daily set, a special send you can buy, priority in someone else's queue. Scarcity is what makes a free tier feel thin enough to upgrade from.

Notapub does not ration. Whoever fits what you wrote reaches you, and you can reach them. Nobody is ahead of you for paying and there is no daily allowance to spend.

The other people you need

Hinge is romance only. Notapub takes the same sentence-and-answer mechanic and applies it to the whole list: a cofounder, a room, a person who has done the visa, someone to run with on Saturday. People put in several unrelated things and get several unrelated kinds of person back, and where one matters more than the rest, the app leaves that alone.

The founder's own next move

Worth noting rather than making too much of: Justin McLeod, who founded Hinge and ran it for over a decade, left to start a voice-first matchmaking company on the premise that the profile-and-photo era is finished. Whatever that becomes, the person who built the profile is not building another one. Notapub already does not have one.

Common questions

Is Notapub a free Hinge alternative?

It is free, and it keeps the part of Hinge that works: people answer a specific thing you said. It is not a dating app and there is no profile to build.

Do I need photos and prompts?

No. One sentence about what you want is the whole input. A picture is optional.

Is there anything behind a paywall?

No. There are no tiers, no boosts and no daily limits.
