Notapub vs Tinder

Tinder is the biggest of these and the one everybody has already tried. You put up photos, you swipe, and when two people swipe the same way you can write to each other. It works at a scale nothing else does, and the numbers have been going the other way for a while: Tinder reported nine straight quarters of falling paying subscribers, with monthly users down again in early 2026. The company's answer has been to add more machinery, including a feature that asks personality questions and offers to read your camera roll.

Notapub is a different mechanic for the underlying want, which is to find a person you do not already know. You write what you are looking for in a sentence. People who fit it reach you. There is nothing to swipe, no photo requirement, and no fee.

A photo is the least specific thing about you

A grid of faces asks you to guess from the one signal that says least about whether this person is any use to you. You can look at a thousand and learn nothing about whether they want kids, whether they are leaving the country in March, or whether they know anything about the thing you have spent your life on.

Notapub starts where a swipe ends. Your input is the sentence you would say out loud: what you want, what you have, what you are trying to do. That is what people are shown, and it is what they answer. A picture is optional and it is not the unit of the thing.

The work is the product, and the work is why people leave

Swiping is designed to keep going. It has to, because a match is rare enough per swipe that the volume is the mechanism. Survey after survey now finds most app users describing themselves as burnt out, and the category posted its first annual revenue decline in 2025.

The honest read is that people did not stop wanting to meet someone. They stopped wanting to do the work. Notapub asks for the sentence once. After that, being found is what happens while you do something else, which is the opposite arrangement to an app whose core loop needs your thumb.

What it wants from you

Tinder's newer features ask for more: personality answers, and optional access to your photo library so it can pick images for you. It also paused an automatic photo-enhancement tool after users objected to it.

Notapub asks for what you say. There is no camera-roll scan, no photo grading, and nothing that improves your appearance on your behalf. What you wrote is what is matched, which is a smaller ask and a more honest one.

Romance is one of the things you need

Tinder does one category. Notapub does not sort your reasons: the same line finds a cofounder, a subletter, a person who has done the surgery you are scheduled for, someone to play doubles with. In practice most people put several unrelated things in and get several unrelated kinds of person back. If one of them turns into something else, the app does not name it and does not need to.

The price of the good version

Tinder's usable experience is heavily tiered, and the ceiling tiers cost real money per year. Notapub is free, and there is no version of it you are being kept out of. Nobody is boosted above anyone else for paying, because nobody is paying.

Common questions

Is Notapub a dating app?

No. It finds the right person for whatever you said you needed. Some of those people matter more than others, and that part is yours.

Do I need photos?

No. Words are the input. A picture is optional and nothing depends on it.

Is there a paid tier?

No. Everything works for free, and nobody outranks you for paying.
