An easier way to get paid for your time

Focus groups are a genuinely good deal if you get into them. This page is about the if, because that is the part the recruitment emails leave out, and once you can see the arithmetic you can decide properly.

The screener is the real cost

A general consumer session pays around $50 to $100 for an hour, or $75 to $150 for ninety minutes. Professional and specialist groups pay several times that. Those numbers are real and they are why people chase this.

What is not on the recruitment email is the incidence rate, which is the share of screened people who qualify. For a broad general-population study it runs 50 to 80 percent, which is fine. For a targeted consumer study, the sort most recruiters are actually running, it is 15 to 35 percent, and for a strict one it is 5 to 15 percent. Screeners themselves are commonly eight to twelve minutes.

So the honest expected value of a screener attempt on a targeted study is roughly a quarter of the headline, minus ten minutes each time you miss. If you get into groups regularly it is still worth the trouble. If you keep filling in screeners and hearing nothing, the incidence rate is why.

What this is instead

You answer about thirty questions about what you want and what you can offer. You speak for about fifteen minutes total on audio, or type it if you prefer. Once your profile is complete, a person reviews your answers. If they are genuine and yours, we send $50.

Every payout is checked by hand. You can claim this once. We never ask for a card, a bank login or a fee.

What it does not have is a gate. You do not need to fit a demographic anybody is recruiting for, there is no callback to wait on, no Tuesday morning in an office, and no session to be cancelled. It pays less than a full focus group session and it is once. The trade is that it actually happens.

It is not a study, and that changes what you are giving

In a focus group you evaluate somebody's product, and your answers become a report you never see.

Here the answers are yours to keep. They become your profile, which is how somebody looking for what you have finds you afterwards. What you said you want or have can appear on a public page; your name, your phone number and your address never do, and the most precise place shown is a city. You can switch that page off, and deleting your account removes all of it.

Common questions

Is this a focus group or a market study?

No. You are not evaluating products or testing commercials. You are saying what you need or what you bring, so other people can find you.

Can I be screened out?

There is no demographic screener, so not for who you are. A profile is rejected only if the answers are filler, copied, or not genuinely yours.

Why do you pay $50 for this?

Notapub only works once enough people have said what they want and what they can offer. Paying the first people to do it properly is the fastest honest way through that, which is also why it is one per person and why it stops.

When do I get paid?

A person reads your finished profile, then the payout is arranged with you directly. It is not instant and we will not promise a date.
