A friend to talk to

Most people do not need more contacts. They have hundreds. What is missing is one person who gets the specific thing they are into and has the time to actually talk about it.

Those are different problems and almost every product solves the first one. Notapub works from what you say rather than from who you already know, so the people it brings you have a reason to be interested before they arrive.

Say what you're into →

This is not a pub. Ages 13+.

Talk about the thing, meet the person

Say what you have been reading, building, worrying over or turning into an obsession. That is the input. The people it lands with are the ones worth talking to, and they come to you rather than you going through a list.

Friendship in adult life tends to arrive sideways like this. Almost nobody makes a friend by setting out to make a friend. They spend time on something with someone and after a while the something matters less than the someone.

The specific version works better than the general one

"I like films" is a true sentence that gives nobody anything to say. "I have watched everything Kiarostami made and I cannot find one person to argue with about the last twenty minutes of Taste of Cherry" is a sentence somebody answers.

The narrow version feels risky because it seems to rule people out. It does rule people out, and they were never going to write to you. What it buys is that the two or three who do arrive open with something real.

No audience to keep up

There are no followers, no feed to feed, no streak and nothing that decays if you disappear for a month. One good conversation is the whole product and there is no number going up beside it.

That also means there is nothing to perform. What you write is matched to particular people rather than displayed to an audience, so the version of yourself that shows up can be the accurate one.

How long it takes, and what to do meanwhile

Hours to a couple of days, usually. The person on the other end has their own life and answers when they get to it, which is the cost of them being a person and not a feature.

If you want to talk sooner than that, there is a voice called Nora you can call now. She is not a person and she tells you so. She spends about fifteen minutes on what you are into and what you are looking for, and what you say becomes the sentences that go out to find people. Then she has no reason to want you back, because she is the intake and the friends are the point.

Common questions

How is this different from a group chat?

You do not have to already be in the room. You say what you are into and the people who are into it too get brought to you.

Is it only for making friends?

It is for finding the right person for whatever you asked for: a friend, a hand nearby, a cofounder, an answer. Who that turns out to be is left to you.

Is it free?

Yes, on iPhone, Android and the web, for ages thirteen and up.
