Someone to talk to

Some evenings you want one person who understands what you mean. A feed does not do this, and a room of strangers performing for each other does it worse.

Notapub has two answers to that and they work on different timescales. One is available in the next minute and is not a person. The other is people, and it takes a day or two. Both are free and neither asks you to build a profile first.

This is not a pub. Ages 13+.

The fast answer, in the next minute

There is a voice on Notapub called Nora. You press call and she picks up. She is not a person and she tells you so, which matters, because the point of her is what she does afterwards rather than the fifteen minutes themselves.

She asks what you are into and what you are looking for. Your answers become plain sentences in your own words, and those sentences are what real people get matched against. So the call is company now and groundwork at the same time, and when it ends nothing about the design wants you to call again tomorrow.

The slower answer, which is the real one

What you said goes looking for people. It is not posted to a crowd or dropped into a feed to be scrolled past. It gets matched to particular people whose own words line up with yours, nearby if nearness matters and anywhere if it does not.

That part takes hours or days, because the person on the other end has their own life and their own timing. What arrives is someone who read what you wrote and answered on purpose, which is a different object from a face on a grid. It also keeps working after you close the app, so somebody who joins next week and has been through exactly your thing can still be brought to you.

Nothing to fill in first

There is no profile to build and no grid of faces to sort. You write what you are thinking about, the way you would text a friend who already knows you, and that sentence is the whole input.

Writing it specifically is the one thing that changes your results. "Someone to talk to" is true and it is thin. "I moved cities in March for a job I am not sure about and I have not had a proper conversation since" gives the matching something to work with, and it is the sentence a person can actually answer.

What anyone can see about you

Worth being exact rather than reassuring. What you said you want or have can appear on a public profile page, which is how somebody searching the open web finds you at all. Your name, your phone number and your exact location never appear there, and the most precise place it will ever show is a city.

You can switch that page off and keep everything else, and deleting your account removes it. Anything you said on a call is yours to read, edit or delete on your profile whenever you want.

Common questions

Do I actually end up talking to a real person?

That is the point of the whole thing. Nora is the first fifteen minutes, and people are the reason she asked.

How long before someone reaches me?

Usually hours to a couple of days. It depends on who is around and how specific you were.

Is it free?

Yes, on iPhone, Android and the web, for ages thirteen and up. There is no paid tier.
