notapub / Talk

Someone to talk to at night

The house is quiet and your head is not. Late is when you most want to talk and the hardest hour to find anyone, because everyone you would normally text is asleep.

Two things are genuinely available at this hour, and it is worth being straight about which is which.

This is not a pub. Ages 13+.

At two in the morning the honest answer is Nora

You can press call right now and a voice picks up. Her name is Nora, she is not a person, and she says so rather than letting you wonder. She will ask what is keeping you up and what you are looking for, and she is unhurried about it.

The call runs about fifteen minutes and it is doing a second job while you talk. What you say becomes plain sentences about what you want, in your own words, and those go out to find people. So the hour that felt wasted is the hour that sets up the next part.

Some people are genuinely up, for the same reason

Say that you are awake and want to talk and it becomes one of the things you get matched on, so the people it reaches first skew toward the ones also up at this hour. Time zones help more than insomnia does. Your two in the morning is somebody's lunch break.

What comes back is a person who read your sentence and answered it, rather than a room to shout into. It can take until morning. That is the honest timing and it is the price of the other person being real.

Nothing here is built to keep you up longer

A feed at this hour is designed to hold you, and three in the morning is the state it is optimized for. Notapub gains nothing from a longer session. There is no counter going up, nothing to scroll to the end of, and the call has no reason to want you back tomorrow.

A fifteen-minute call that produces four honest sentences is a better result for us than a two-hour one that produces three, because the sentences are what the product runs on. The good outcome is that you put the phone down.

If it is worse than a bad night

This is a place to find people and it is not a crisis line. If you are thinking about hurting yourself, call or text 988 in the United States, or the local equivalent where you are, and do that first.

It will still be here afterwards.

Common questions

Is anyone actually awake?

Nora is, immediately. People are spread across time zones, so some are up now and others will read it in the morning.

Do I have to sign up first?

On the web you can start straight away. It asks for a phone number after a few exchanges, so people can reach you and you can get back in.

Is it free?

Yes, on iPhone, Android and the web, for ages thirteen and up.
